January/February Highlights
Language Arts: World Traveler Project
Math: A Year Is... Project
- Students have recently begun an independent study titled, "World Traveler." For this project, students selected a country of interest. From here, they used Google Earth to explore the country in 3D. Currently, students are researching various aspects of their chosen country using books and different websites. After all of the research components are completed, students will have the opportunity to select a specific product and point of view from which to showcase their learning! Stay tuned for updates as the children progress through the "World Traveler" project!
Math: A Year Is... Project
- Students have begun an "A Year Is..." math project. We all know that there are 365 days in a year (except for leap years), 12 months, and 4 seasons. But, what other ways could a year be expressed!?! This project challenges students to think about representing a year in creative and practical ways related to their lives. Students have recently completed the brainstorming part of the project. Some ideas of ways to express a year are: cups of milk, time in SOAR, number of times I trip and fall, and how many hugs I receive. Students have been collecting data to provide them with "real" information. From here, students will use multi-step computation to determine how a year can be expressed based on the events they selected. Finally, students will share their project by creating computer-generated graphs and they will design a bumper sticker advertising how a year is expressed.
